As a child, I learned important lessons in business ownership through my father’s struggle. He owned a small industrial fabrication shop. It started well, and I remember how encouraged he was during the first few years. He had big dreams. Then things turned ugly, and he held on, believing only he could turn it around.
He couldn't. He did not have the skills to take his business to the next level.
The big dreams quickly turned into big troubles, layoffs, and tough times for our family. When he was finally forced to shut down the company, I watched him carry the shame of that failure as he returned to work for someone else. I wish he had been able to benefit financially and emotionally from the sale of his business instead of closing it down.
His story ended like 90% of all small businesses. Only a tiny fraction of business owners successfully exit through a change of ownership transaction. Most owners wait until it is too late and too often exit the hard way.
Despite seeing what happened to my father, I knew from a young age that owning a business was the only path. I started my first business in college. I had simple beliefs then: Accept failures fast. Learn the lessons in mistakes. Try different approaches until it works. And never remain discouraged or defeated.
It’s been 35 years, and I still embrace those same core beliefs. With over 6 business behind me now, I consider myself a serial entrepreneur. My goals and intentions mature and improve with each new business. I’ve come to appreciate not only the lifestyle that owning a small business can provide, but also the value created for everyone involved from the sale of a business in a change of ownership transaction.
I’m ready to do it again. As exciting as it is to bootstrap a new business, you know how tedious and exhausting the startup phase can be. I want to put my experience to work and really grow a company. Skip the startup phase - and focus on the growth phase. So, I'm looking for the right business to buy, then build upon.
